Omega fatty acids are essential in balancing steroid hormones such as pregnenolone, progesterone, estrogen and cortisol. Essential Fatty Acid contains Omega 3 fish oils and Omega 6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are also known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Omega-6 fatty acid is in the gamma linolenic acid form known as GLA which is from borage oil.
Today's media is overwhelmed with the evils of fat in the diet. Unfortunately, that message has been oversold, as there are definitely good fats out there, and some are just plain what their name says they are: essential...
It's sort of 'the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' scenario. There are definitely bad fats out there. 'Trans' fats, often an unnatural, synthesized form of fat (like in margarine, for example), are a stress on the body, and it's a good idea to avoid them. Similarly, deep-fried fats of any type are altered by the heat, and even tend to be rancid, making them another 'bad dude'. (If you want to get into 'the Ugly', just deep fry a trans fat!)
That leaves us with the 'good guys', of which there are several. Saturated fats often get lumped in with trans fats as one of the bad boys, which actually is a mistake. All of our body's cell walls are primarily saturated fat, so the manufacture of new cells requires it.
It's kind of worth knowing that the 'saturated' term merely describes how many hydrogen sites on a fat molecule are hydrogen-filled: in the case of saturated, all the sites are filled; for the mono-unsaturated, like olive oil, one site is left unfilled; while the rest, called polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), are those where multiple molecule sites are unfilled. The saturated fats tend to be solid at room temperature, while the more unsaturated the fat, the more it tends to be in a liquid (oil) state. Hang with us, and we'll tell you in a moment the main reason you want to know the difference.
Within the polyunsaturated group lies that 'essential' sub-group. These are the fatty acids that humans cannot synthesize on their own (linolenic and linoleic acids), so they must be obtained from dietary sources. Then humans can make other fatty acids from those two, giving us omega-3 and omega-6 (and other) fatty acids.
To whittle down a huge (HUGE) subject, our diets tend to lean (heavily) toward the omega-6 group. This group is associated with inflammation, and needs more omega-3 to offset or cancel such influences out. The bad news is that those omega-3 sources are hard to get, available primarily from deep-sea fish sources (cod, halibut, mackerel, etc.) and a few less-common plant sources (flax, borage).
So, a good EFA supplement can obviously be most helpful in a multitude of ways, while obtaining the proper ratio of EFA components can be most difficult. 2. Our second twist is a bit more personal, on a day-to-day basis: fish oil capsules can leave a fishy taste in the mouth...seems like a little thing, but to many this is enough of a hassle to leave EFA supplements alone.
