The whole world seems hung up on generating bigger, more exciting words and phrases to describe some new, earth-shattering, super-duper product (which, more often than not, tends to be a somewhat dubious, non-super-duper product). However, there are times when such enthusiasm may actually be warranted…
Not too long ago (and on national television), a pretty much unknown fruit extract was described as a “revolutionary fat buster.” In a population of ever-increasing girth that certainly could use some significant ‘fat-busting’, such hype might generate a considerable degree of skepticism, especially when it’s also called “the Holy Grail” of fat-busting!
So, is this really just marketing hype, or perhaps a truly revolutionary event for dieters?
We at Metabolic Research Center couldn’t tell, at first, but we certainly felt we at least had to look into it.
The extract in question is called Garcinia Cambogia, which comes from the rind of the fruit from an ‘Old World’ tree called the tamarind. (Just how somebody got the idea to start playing around with just the rind of this particular fruit from this particular tree is kind of a mystery, but they've been doing it for a very long time over there, and we now think you’ll be very glad they did!)
As it happens, Dr. Julie Chen, a well-known, health-oriented medical doctor with a specialty in integrative medicine, revealed that, in observing her own practice, people can expect to lose an average of about 4 pounds in one month, not counting the additional efforts of diet and exercise! She then added that, if diet and exercise were added to the routine of just swallowing Garcinia Cambogia, those individuals would “…lose two to three times what they normally lose.”
Yep, that’s definitely kinda cool.
Her enthusiasm stems from observations that the effects of Garcinia on weight loss are not due to a single action, but are actually a two-fold, ‘dual-action’ process of basically unrelated events: first, one’s appetite is suppressed; and second, fat is prevented from being manufactured by the body.
Ah, but the peel of this sour little fruit isn’t done yet. As it happens, subsequent studies have revealed that there is a neat little list of additional benefits: serum cholesterol levels tend to decrease, serum triglyceride levels tend to decrease, serum LDL levels (the so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol) tend to decrease, while serum HDL levels (the so-called ‘good’ cholesterol) actually tend to increase! Better yet, it’s also been found that overweight subjects tend to experience improved insulin sensitivity. That isn’t a small thing, since insulin resistance makes it more difficult to get calories burned for energy. Such a metabolic problem is problematic not only in weight loss, but also in a myriad of other health issues, as well.
(It kind of actually IS starting to sound like a ‘Holy Grail’ of weight loss!)
Unfortunately, one difficulty in all this excitement has been the efforts of some to take advantage of the
marketing hoopla by selling products purporting to have the active ingredient in Garcinia (an agent called hydroxycitric acid, or HCA), while actually containing little, or even NONE, of the active ingredient at all! That’s why MRC makes sure that each capsule of its Garcinia Plus supplement contains 700 milligrams of Garcinia Cambogia fruit extract, with 60% HCA on board (the basic G. cambogia is reported to contain around 20-30% HCA). We figure that, if you’re gonna buy it, we want you to actually get it.
However, we’ve gone a couple of steps further. In addition to the Garcinia, we added some Ashwagandha root powder. This herb is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine, and has a big list of actions for which it’s used. Its main benefit, though, is as an ‘adaptogen’, meaning it helps the body accommodate to varying stress levels, clearly an issue for those trying to alter their diet, increase their exercise, and lose pounds of fat.
Plus, we also decided to include a dose of alpha lipoid acid (ALA), a powerful, natural antioxidant that has particular additional benefit in helping the body properly utilize glucose (an often difficult task in those attempting to lose weight).
