How Much Water Do You Really Need to Lose Weight?

August 9, 2021

Did you know that your body is made up of 60% water, and our bodily functions rely on water consumption to do their jobs effectively? And when it comes to weight loss, drinking increased amounts of water can yield quick results!

How much water exactly? Here at Metabolic, our weight loss programs require a minimum of 64oz of "clear" water daily. Today, we will be covering why this amount of water is so vital to flushing the fat and keeping you safe & healthy while losing weight!

What is considered "Clear" water?

When we say "clear" water, we mean water with NOTHING in it, the only exception being a lemon slice.

Things like Crystal Light, Mio Drops, and flavored waters, while permitted in your weight loss program, cannot be counted towards your daily 64oz intake. The same goes for our HNS (High Nutrient Supplements), the water you use to mix up your supplements can not be considered as your water consumption.

The Science: Why You Need 64oz of Water Per Day to Promote Weight Loss

If you are following our menu and burning fat rapidly, then you need at least 64oz of water to properly flush the fat, otherwise, that fat storage can just recongregate elsewhere in the body, which will result in little or no weight loss.

In addition to flushing fat, it also keeps your body processing food and fat burn safely. Our menu is very high in protein, this means your bodies will have more protein to break down than what is typically consumed. Did you know that our kidneys are responsible for breaking down protein? During digestion, protein is broken down into various byproducts. Healthy kidneys remove the byproducts and filter out the wastes in the urine. So with the higher amount of protein utilized on our menu, we need to consume ample amounts of water to properly flush and cleanse the protein out from the kidneys.

This brings us back to weight loss. If the kidneys can not function properly, some of those byproducts are dumped onto the liver. One of the liver’s primary functions is to metabolize fat into usable energy for the body. But, if the liver has to do some of the kidney's work, it can't operate at full throttle. As a result, it metabolizes less fat, meaning more fat remains stored in the body and weight loss stops.

5 Benefits of Drinking Water

Now that you have a better understanding of the science behind why we need more water to promote weight loss, it's time to learn about the benefits of consuming 64oz of water a day!

1. Maintain Blood Pressure: As we mentioned before, our body's functions rely on water. For instance, drinking water actually helps maintain blood pressure, because when we have a lack of water, it can cause the blood to thicken, which increases blood pressure.

2. Feel More Full for Longer: When your stomach is full, it tells the brain to stop eating. Water can help fill up your stomach and make your brain think you are actually fuller faster, preventing you from overeating and in many cases, from gaining unwanted weight!

3. Supports Digestion: Water is also necessary for proper digestion. The bowel needs water to work properly. And dehydration can lead to digestive problems, like constipation, and an overly acidic stomach.

4. Halts Aging: On the beauty side of benefits, drinking water helps preserve the skin and prevents damage. When dehydrated, it makes our skin more vulnerable to skin disorders and wrinkling.

5. Supports Brain Function: Finally we end with one of our favorite facts about h20. Drinking water makes us smarter! Research has suggested that staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp, your mood stable and your motivation intact. You can also think through a problem more easily.

Tips for Drinking More Water Throughout Your Day

Drinking 64oz of water is a job in itself… let alone the additional bathroom breaks you’ll inevitably have to take. It truly takes awareness and effort to consume this much water every day. But we’ve had some experience in this department with a few clients along the way and thought we would share some helpful tips and tricks! Because believe us… if they can do it, so can you!

1. Drink water first: Studies have shown that by having a minimum of 8oz of water before having anything else in the morning, you will find yourself having more of a thirst for water for the rest of the day. It's like it sets the pace.

2. Find the right cup: Some people like to drink their water with a straw, some a big gallon jug with lines marking your time goals, and some like to drink from a shaker bottle. You have to find what works best for you!

3. Set alarms to not forget: We all can get busy, we know how it goes. You can be at your desk and look up at the clock and realize it's almost noon and you've barely made a dent in the first few sips of water. Set alarms as reminders to drink your water throughout the day so you don't end up fighting to get it all in before bed. One, you'll feel very full. And two, you will be up ALL night with frequent trips to the bathroom.

4. Time your water with your meals: Make it your goal to get in a minimum of 22oz of water before breakfast, 22oz before lunch, and 22oz before dinner. This breaks it up, and gives the illusion of smaller goals throughout the day.
